Daily Dose 7/22

Today's Dose is all about Soccer, I'm on a bit of a high still from last nights game!

Last night the Sounders played in front of a packed house of 4900 people at Starfire and needed OT to beat Houston. They are now in the Final of the US Open Cup against D.C. United on Sept 2nd in Washington D.C. (I feel a road trip) A quick note about the Final, it will be aired on Fox Soccer Channel at 4:30pm on Sept 2nd but maybe even a bigger note is that the winner of the game goes right into the CONCACAF Champions League which is a very prestigious tournament!

I have to give it to them, they never quit. Houston scored in the 31st minute and we really had controlled the flow and tempo of the game up until that point. There was a little miscommunication between defenders and the Houston forward Akinbiyi punched it in from 6 yards out.

The game continued to play out the same, sounders controlling most of the play (we did get a big lift when Zakuai and Alonso came on in the 65th minute) with about 15 minutes to play Houston started to show tired legs all around and started to pack 9 and 10 men behind the ball. Seattle really started to apply the pressure at this time and had many opportunities just miss. Finally in the 89th minute Le Toux knocked a ball in and Levequec touched it to Jaqua and he buried it far post.

The Sounders out shot Houston 26-7 and Zakuani really was a dominate force creating chance after chance for the Sounders. 5 minutes into the first half of over time Zakuani received the ball on the left side and beat his marker (yet again) and sent a cross into the middle, the ball rebounded off the defense and Stephen King was there to bury it for what turned out to be the winning goal. Late in the game Hurtado received his second yellow resulting in a red card and he will miss the final.

The officiating left a bad taste in most fans mouth once again, not sure if its the environment or the lack of experience but the Ref's have been really poor. This has been a recurring problem for this tournament and I hope it gets improved upon next year.

Here is todays soccer Dose.
