Total Skills Vol. 29

The global game of football, unlike baseball and basketball in America, has yet to reach its analytical tipping point. However, it is ripe for change. With a growing American influence on the business of football across England, the revolution is coming.

Racing Santander 1 – Real Madrid 3 (La Liga, March 6, 2011)

The accepted wisdom is that today’s Champions League match at the Camp Nou between Barcelona and Arsenal is the biggest game in the world, but it is not in fact the biggest, at least in terms of players on the field. That distinction belongs to a game (actually, two games) played in Ashbourne, England, that have been annual events for 350 years (the first written record dates from 1253) and have roots in pagan times, more than 1,000 years ago. On Shrove Tuesday (called Fat Tuesday in some parts of the world) and Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season for Christians, thousands will participate in the Shrovetide football match.

Atletico Madrid 3 – Villarreal 1 (La Liga, March 5, 2011)

Human beings: clever enough to land Neil Armstrong on the moon but seemingly not yet capable of inventing a foolproof method for telling when a soccer ball crosses a goal line. Hard to believe, isn’t it?

Inter Milan 5 – Genoa 2 (Serie A, March 6, 2011)

There are two types of people who follow soccer: fans and supporters. Though supporters are certainly fans of the game and their team, it’s their passion – some might say obsession – for the latter that sets them apart. Their songs, their flags and their coordinated tifo displays are all indicators that they don’t just want to watch the game, they want to be part of the game. Fans love soccer, supporters live soccer.

Lyon 5 – Arles 0 (Ligue 1, March 6, 2011)

Rangers and Celtic have agreed on a six point plan, It has been a big debate in Scotland and even the politicians are trying to figure it out. They need to leave the football to the football players and teams!

Fiorentina 3 – Catania 0 (Serie A, March 6, 2011)

Something special happened in Italy last weekend in the match between Narnese and Casa del Diavolo in the Eccellenza Umbria league, as fans witnessed one of the fastest goals in football history.

It took just four seconds for Narnese forward Michele Virgilio to score.

Receiving the ball on the halfway line directly from the kick-off, Virgilio immediately went for goal. His effort was sublime, and it caught out the Casa del Diavolo keeper to perfection.

Sampdoria 2 – Cesena 3 (Serie A, March 6, 2011)

To set this up, a streaker dressed as Borat ran on the pitch, a player floored him and got a Red Card for it. “I’m dumbfounded and speechless. A guy ran on to the pitch without any of the stewards getting near him and I thought I was doing them a favour. My only thought was to get hold him so we could get on with the game. I managed to grab him and bring him to the ground and the funny thing was the stewards actually thanked me for it. But the ref decided to send me off and it beggars belief. Their players told the ref not to send me off and their chairman even offered to take a player off to even things up. The ref lost the game after that and he knew he had made a great error by the reaction of Havant’s players and management. In hindsight I perhaps shouldn’t have done it but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I’m sure people will crucify me for this but I have broad shoulders.” – Ashley Vickers, Dorchester Town.

Freiburg 1 – Werder Bremen 3 (Bundesliga, March 6, 2011)

The Italy vs. Serbia game played in October of last year was abandoned after 7 minutes. The Serbian hooligan who instigated the whole event was sentenced to 3 years in Jail today.

Hamburg 2 – Mainz 4 (Bundesliga, March 6, 2011)

One week until the First kick in MLS (March 15th LA vs. Seattle)with that in mind here is a look at "Top 5 Tifo Moments" in the MLS.

Hannover 3 – Bayern Munich 1 (Bundesliga, March 5, 2011)

Nani is let down over Manchester United's silence over Jaime Carraghers tackle on the weekend. If I was Nani I would be glad because crying after a tackle and looking like a fool reminds me of another Portugese player who whines to much also!!

Nurnberg 5 – St. Pauli 0 (Bundesliga, March 5, 2011)
