Top Skills Vol.26

Title 19 is all but wrapped up for Manchester United.

Inter Milan 2 – Schalke 5 (Champions League, April 5, 2011)

With one of the goals of the season Inter broke the deadlock inside the opening seconds of the match; Neuer raced out his goal to head clear the danger towards the halfway line but Dejan Stankovic volleyed a crazy shot that ripped into the net without bouncing.

Schalke equalised and netted a crucial away goal soon after as a set-play fell into Joel Matip’s path and he finished from close range. Just after the half hour Inter restored their lead when Zanetti cut in from the left, played in Cambiasso who in turn fed Diego Milito and the Argentine hitman found the net. An incredible first half then saw Schalke level for the second time as Edu managed to take on three Inter defenders before scoring on the rebound as the Germans continued to stun the reigning champs.

After the break Schalke got their noses in front for the first time as Faran slipped a pass into Raul and the Spaniard showed his experience rolling Chivu and slipping a shot past Cesar. Schalke incredibly went 4-2 in the 57th when Raul broke down the inside right channel and watched his cross turned into his own net by Andrea Ranocchia. And then, unbelievably, Schalke hit a fifth as Edu collected the ball on the edge of the box, spun, and cracked in a rocket past Cesar.

Real Madrid 4 – Tottenham 0 (Champions League, April 5, 2011)

After looking dangerous from the off Real struck after just four minutes as Emmanuel Adebayor continued his excellent scoring record against Spurs with a header from a corner that squeezed through Modric’s legs on the line. Spurs’ mission took a second major nosedive in the 15th minute when, after picking up a booking earlier on Sergio Ramos, Peter Crouch for a second yellow for a foul on Marcelo.

Gareth Bale managed to get in behind the Real backline only once in the first half but hit only found the side-netting, while at the other end Emmanuel Adebayor narrowly missed connecting with a header in front of goal. Cristiano Ronaldo and Benoit Assou-Ekotto traded near misses at either end at the start of the second half. In the 56th minute Real doubled their lead as a simple corner was headed home by Emmanuel Adebayor.

Another Adebayor then hit the Spurs bar, it was game, set and match Real Madrid in the 71st minute as Angel di Maria collected the ball on the top right outside the box and released a left footer howitzer into the far top corner. Three minutes from time the tie looked dead and buried as Cristiano Ronaldo squeezed a volley under Gomes for 4-0.

Saprissa 2 - Real Salt Lake 1 (CONCACAF Champions League Semi-final, April 5th, 2011)

In yesterday's Champions League the world witnessed an amazing goal by Dejan Stankovic, it was a thing of beauty, but he has done it before and has proven over and over again to be a scorer of beautiful goals!

St Johnstone 0 – Rangers 2 (SPL, April 5, 2011)

Defending a 2-0 first-leg lead, Real Salt Lake dropped a 2-1 decision at Estadio Saprissa, but advanced on aggregate to earn a place in the CONCACAF Champions League final in the process. In doing so, RSL became the first MLS team to reach the tournament’s final since CONCACAF moved to a group stage, Champions League format in 2008.

The United States will take on Guatemala in an U-20 World Cup qualifying quarterfinal on Wednesday night (10 p.m., ESPN3.com/ESPN Deportes) that will determine which CONCACAF nation reaches this summer's tournament in Colombia. After scoring one of the goals, De Rosario stopped and made a motion like he was signing a check, a clear message to the club’s management that the four-time M.L.S. champion and perennial all-star believed he was worth more than his guaranteed salary of $443,750.

Thankfully Davide Santon didn’t listen to Marco Materazzi. “If you don’t go to the 2010 World Cup Cup you should turn to the balcony and throw yourself off,” advised his Inter team-mate late in the 2009 season. If Materazzi was joking, in his own inimitable style, about the balcony then his suggestion that Santon should be on the plane to South Africa was a very serious one. He expected the full-back to not only be in Marcello Lippi’s squad but a key member of it within a year’s time.

The reality is I play for money. I don’t see the point of lying, of saying I love the color of my shirt. Today I have a very good job, I can’t say otherwise. All in all, I work two hours a day. But I do it to earn money like everyone else on this planet.
