Monday 10 October 2011

Seattle did their part for LA and lost to Philly. LA claimed their 4th supporters shiled and a spot in next years CONCACAF Champions League.

If the Los Angeles Galaxy parlays its fourth Supporters’ Shield trophy into its third MLS Cup title, it will buck the percentages. Seattle, the only team with a chance of catching the Galaxy for the best regular-season record, lost that chance Saturday when Philadelphia handed it a 2-0 defeat at CenturyLink field. By doing so, in some bizarre way, the Sounders may have enhanced their odds of winning MLS Cup.

Playoff standings if the playoffs started today. Seattle would have a bye week then start up with a game somewhere between Oct 28th - Nov 1st

USA 1 – Honduras 0 (International Friendly, October 8, 2011)

Having not played for the U.S. men's national team since a 4-0 loss to Spain in a June friendly, Onyewu ended his international hiatus by coming off the bench at halftime to replace the injured Michael Orozco Fiscal at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday. His main objective: to help the United States maintain the 1-0 lead it had taken over the Catrachos in the first half off a goal from Clint Dempsey.

Seattle Sounders 0 – Philadelphia Union 2 (MLS, October 8, 2011)

THis week's History lesson: Back in the 1980′s there was a time when soccer in America was without a first division. The North American Soccer League (NASL) had folded in 1984 and Major League Soccer (MLS) was still a dozen years away (1996). Then came FC Seattle, and eventually the WWCL…

New England Revolution 1 – San Jose Earthquakes 2 (MLS, October 8, 2011)

But the crucial outcome, for the Three Lions at least, will be the ban handed to Wayne Rooney for his dismissal in their final qualifier last Friday. Rooney petulantly kicked out at Montenegro's Miodrag Dzudovic.

With no more competitive games for England before next summer's finals in Ukraine and Poland, UEFA has already confirmed Rooney will automatically miss the opening group game.

Montenegro 2 – England 2 (Euro 2012 qualifier, October 7, 2011)

Real Salt Lake’s Kyle Beckerman suspended additional 2 games by MLS for headbutt incident. Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman, a borderline MLS most valuable candidate, was suspended for two matches for a headbutting incident and, consequently, will miss the final two regular season matches.

MLS’s disciplinary committee ruled Beckerman’s actions were “completely outside the scope of the game and demonstrated utter disregard for the safety of his opponent.”

Beckerman received a red card during the Sept. 28 match against the Chicago Fire and sat out last Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Galaxy. He will also miss next Friday against the Colorado Rapids and Oct. 22 against the Portland Timbers. Because Beckerman is currently on U.S. national team duty, the additional suspension did not apply to RSL’s game at Vancouver on Thursday night.

The MLS players’ union appealed the suspension on Beckerman’s behalf, but Commissioner Don Garber upheld the ruling.

Beckerman apologized last week, saying, “I made a mistake and I just split-second made a decision that was really hurtful to the team. And so I’m sorry for that.”

Portugal 5 – Iceland 3 (Euro 2012 qualifier, October 7, 2011)

When U.S. men's national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann revealed his starting lineup to his players, Danny Williams was in shock.

Williams, the 22-year-old son of an American serviceman and German mother, was included in the starting XI that would take on Honduras at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday night, something that may not have even seemed possible just a month ago.

France 3 – Albania 0 (Euro 2012 qualifier, October 7, 2011)

Adu, at 17, ignored his coach’s comments and set off for a grand European adventure. After all, he was the youngest captain of the U.S. National U-20 team, the youngest player to sign for Major League Soccer ( at 14), the first American soccer player to sign a $1 Million dollar Nike contract as a teenager, and the most talked about soccer player in America.

Argentina 4 – Chile 1 (South America World Cup Qualifying, October 7, 2011)

Now, with most of MLS taking a break this weekend, we level our gaze on the top five frontrunners. It's all about the big dogs today. With the wild card round almost two weeks away and the picture rapidly crystallizing, here are the top five teams most likely to take home hardware in November. Philly gets the coveted honor of making up enough ground in a month to qualify for both lists.

Turkey 1 – Germany 3 (Euro 2012 qualifier, October 7, 2011)

Why Armenia could strike a blow for the minnow at Euro 2012 Some fine young players (and the late Ian Porterfield) have helped carry Armenia to the brink of a Euro 2012 play-off berth!

Serbia 1 – Italy 1 (Euro 2012 qualifier, October 7, 2011)

Once again goal-line technology was raised at the Leaders Conference in London last week with legendary official Pierluigi Collina sparking headlines by claiming “I think the goal line can be easily controlled by two additional assistant referees.”

We hate to disagree with Collina but this website has been campaigning for some time that goal-line technology is an absolute must. The fact tennis, cricket, rugby etc. all employ technology whilst the most popular sport in the world doesn’t is a sad reflection on the likes of Sepp Blatter and FIFA.

Once again, a team has come a cropper of a short sighted official and you can’t help but feel very sorry for Alondras who saw a perfectly good goal disallowed yesterday.

The match in question took place in one of Spain’s fourth division regional leagues, Group 1 of the Tercera Division. Alondras travelled to Pontevedra and at 0-0 Fran Fandino looped in a fine header into the top corner.

As the Alondras players went to celebrate, the ball clearly went in and through the net before bouncing in the stands behind.

Referee Garcia Parada waved play on and with six minutes to go Pontevedra added a whole heap of salt on to Alondras’ gaping wound by bagging the winner to claim a 1-0 victory.

Czech Republic 0 – Spain 2 (Euro 2012 qualifier, October 7, 2011)
