Seattle Sounders 1 – Monterrey 2 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 18, 2011)

Just in case anyone thought there was one talent Lionel Messi didn't possess -- that is, a sense of dramatic timing -- on Saturday the Argentine celebrated the seventh anniversary of his La Liga debut for Barcelona with a pair of goals that put him second in the club's all-time scoring list.

FC Dallas 0 – FC Toronto 3 (CONCACAF Champions League, October 18, 2011)

Four teams will try to join the Seattle Sounders into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League when the final round of group play gets underway on Tuesday, and while they all have plenty of work still to do, there is a chance MLS could send a record four teams into the knockout round.

Manchester City 2 – Villarreal 1 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

It was an inconspicuous initiation. Back in late September of 2000, Benfica drew 2-2 at home to Swedish side Halmstad to crash out of the UEFA Cup. The Lisbon outfit had lost the first leg 2-1 and just changed coaches. Nothing special there, you would think. Except the new man was a certain Jose Mourinho and the match was his European debut.

Otelul Galati 0 – Manchester United 2 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

D.C. United striker Charlie Davies has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the owner of a nightclub and the company that hosted a party at which alcohol was served to the driver responsible for a car accident that severely injured the soccer player and killed another passenger.

Real Madrid 4 – Lyon 0 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

Another MLS player is in the spotlight this morning. FC Dallas’ Greek-American defender George John, who was pursued during the summer by Blackburn Rovers of the EPL, is now reportedly being targeted by EPL outfit Wigan Athletic. John is a Shoreline HS grad and played at UW.

Dinamo Zagreb 0 – Ajax 2 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

This weeks history lesson in soccer comes from England and has to do with Goals, Lots of Goals!! Within 121 days the Football League's goalscoring record for one player in one match was broken three times.

Lille 0 – Inter Milan 1 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

It's the most competitive league in the world, right? Anybody can beat anybody on their day. There are no easy games in this league. The mantra of the Premier League apologists is well known. Every time a team from the Little Fourteen (as nobody ever calls them) plays a team from the Big Three (it is just three now, right?) the cliches come trotting along: in our league nobody gives anybody anything, everything's a glorious struggle

Basel 0 – Benfica 2 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

Rangers have withdrawn all co-operation with the BBC for a second time in three months and just 48 hours before the broadcaster is due to screen a special investigation into the takeover of the Ibrox club by Craig Whyte.

Napoli 1 – Bayern Munich 1 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)

Describing what comes over you in the split second before throwing an elbow, kicking out or mouthing off is very difficult. Is it passion, unconstrained frustration, or plain old anger?

CSKA Moscow 3 – Trabzonspor 0 (Champions League, October 18, 2011)
