PROFESSIONAL INDOOR SOCCER RETURNS TO TACOMA
I grew up playing soccer and in the 80's in America, and at that time it was a stretch to have someone teach you the proper way to play, but I was very fortunate to have knowledgeable and experienced coaches all the way through high school. I also was able to see soccer on TV once a week with "Soccer made in Germany" being broadcast on PBS Sunday mornings, it was an eye opener to me, but what finally hooked me and helped me choose soccer as a game I was going play and watch my whole life was seeing the game in person, close to home, and at a very high level.
In the 80's seeing soccer was very hard to do, but the Seattle/Tacoma area was a hotbed of soccer and the time the Seattle Sounders were playing in the NASL and a new type of soccer was popping up in Tacoma with the Tacoma Stars playing Indoor Soccer in the new MISL League. My dad actually took me to a Stars game in the Tacoma Dome during their first season in 1983 and I didn't leave my seat during that game, the game was fast, the hair was long, alot of goals were scored, and the players were doing "Back Flips off the Boards".
I was sitting in the stands on this night very disappointed!! Up above the field was a huge net full of Balloons and paper that was suppose to be released when the Stars won.
I was now hooked on indoor, luckily at this time in the Seattle/Tacoma area other people took notice and a few indoor facilities popped up, Frank Barton's indoor soccer complex in Federal Way, Woodiniville indoor facility, Everett Indoor Soccer Arena, the Snohomish soccer dome and the Mecca of its era, "The Tacoma Soccer Center". My coaches took note also and we were playing once or twice a week in Tacoma, at the same time the " Tacoma Stars" would practice at the soccer center so we would watch and learn, for young kids with dreams and ambitions it was truly an ideal time.
The Tacoma Stars had an enforcer on their team named "Ralph Badass Black"
In the 90's soccer took a bit of a dip in the Tacoma/Seattle area and pro soccer was a little harder to come by, we still had teams "Seattle Storm or FC Seattle" the "Everett/Seattle Big Foot" the PCSL was dominated for years by the "Hibernian Saints of Seattle", The "Seattle SeaDogs" won the CISL championship, and of course the "Seattle Sounders" came back to life in 1994 and carried the torch for the next 15 years as far as outdoor soccer in the area is concerned. In the 2000's we have had a resurgence of soccer with many different leagues for outdoor soccer, USASA, NPSL, PDL, USL2, USSF D2, and MLS.
Now the indoor game is doing the same, the PASL is a nation wide indoor soccer league that combines 47 teams in 8 different divisions across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Last winter the Tacoma stars won 2009/10 PASL-Premier Winter Championships, this year for the first time in 20 years Tacoma will have a Professional Indoor Soccer team again!
The "Tacoma Stars" will kick off their professional debut November 13th against another local team making their indoor pro debut the "Kitsap Pumas" it is sure to be fast, fun, and full of goals!! I suggest you venture down to Tacoma on November 13th and see for yourself!
I introduce you to "Melo" France's new Football Sensation!
Big game for the Seattle Sounders this weekend! A win against Toronto will put Seattle over the 40 point mark and also widen the game in the standings with really only Kansas City(Whom we play next Saturday) having a legit chance of catching us for one of the last 2 playoff spots! Some other Sounder news leaked yesterday, the 2011 uniforms popped up on the Internet, What do you think of them?
