Goal of the Week (Alex for Chelsea)
I have to set up this next Video, The fifth tier in Germany last weekend produced a memorable moment when Astoria Walldorf striker Julian Jaizay scored a sneaky 93rd minute equaliser to deny Villingen a 3-2 win.In a carbon copy of Dion Dublin’s famous goal for Coventry against Newcastle back from 1997, in a desperate attempt to out-smart his opposition striker Jaizay skulked around behind the dozy Villingen keeper Daniel Miletic in the final seconds of the game ready to pounce. Then, as soon as the goalie released the ball, Jaizay revealed himself from behind the custodian to steal the ball and plonk it in the unguarded net.It was pure daylight robbery goal, but it nevertheless was a 100% legal goal.
I play soccer with a bunch of guys whom I've known most of my life, some of us have played together since youth, some since high school and others joined the fray well over 10 years ago. We have played Over 30 soccer for 5 or 6 years and some of us even dabble in Over 40 (yes we are old) alas, I share all of this with you as a way to point out that being older doesn't mean you have to quit, Kevin Poole is now my Hero and to quote a saying from BP "Never Say Die"!!!!
Miss of the Week
In Europe soccer is about passion and fans and clubs do their best to make sure those two things are always present in the stadiums on game days!! In Germany there is a team that plays out of Hamburg called "St Pauli" it is a very small club, but games are always sold out and crowds are always raucous! If you are a VIP you don't even have to leave your seats!!!
A Soccer Ball more Electric than the "Sounders" third kit.
Charlies Davies was on a road to all things great, tearing it up for the USA and scoring goals against our biggest Rivals. His career was taking off in Europe with a move from the Swedish league to Frances Ligue 1, but one night in Washington DC changed his future and now he fights for a comeback and redemption!
Foul of the Week (Hanging on for dear life)
The USA has always been a melting pot of people. If you look at all of our sports leagues you will see 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generations of immigrants. When it comes to Soccer the USA we may not be as big as say Italy or Germany in the World Soccer Rankings, and we have actually lost some players who were born and raised in America because of their immigrant roots to their respective countries, but tides to ebb and flow. Stuart Holden has been able to use his Scottish passport to create his chance in Europe, and so has Eric Lichaj, but their colors still are Red, White, and Blue!!
New York Cosmos
Back in the day when I was a kid the NASL was the league to see, and the team to see was the "New York Cosmos" they had all the superstars and also "Pele" as a kid I can't count how many times I hurt myself trying to perfect the bicycle kick like Pele. Word on the street is that New York is getting the "Gang Back Together" and look to be bigger and better than ever!!
Red Card of the Week comes to us from the College Ranks!
We are two months away from a decision on who will host the 2018 and 2022 Word Cups. The USA has applied to host both and is in strong contention, but what hasn't really been made to public is FIFA's concern about how foreign athletes enter into the USA, we have many regulations that at times prevent athletes from gaining entrance! Can we make changes in time to show we are serious about the World Cup?
MLS Save of the Week Nominees
Here are last weeks "Top 10 Goals form Serie A" this is a little late but always nice to watch "Top Goals from 2010 Word Cup" It was a great summer of Soccer and I feel in America we picked up some new fans with all the coverage that was given to the World Cup!
We are 2 months into the 2010/11 season and we have had some great goals, Here are the Top 10 Goal of the Season Nominees so far!
1). Sergio Canales (England U19 Spain U19, July 28, 2010) – As the new season got underway, the young Spanish pups showed their invention against the Young Lions pulling off a sublime free-kick routine that they executed to perfection.
2). Gareth Bale (Stoke v Tottenham, August 21, 2010) – The Tottenham winger laid down his stall for the season cracking home a peach of a volley to silence the noisy Britianna Stadium
3). Brice Jovial (assist Hassane Alla) (Reims v Le Havre, August 24, 2010) – Sometimes the goal comes secondary to the assist, and this is the archetypal example of that. Hats off to Hassane Alla for his world class skill in the build up to this French classic
4). Hamit Altintop (Kazakhstan v Turkey, September 3, 2010) – The Turkish and Bayern Munich midfielder displayed flawless technique to score a wondrous volley in the Euro 2012 qualifiers
5). Cleo (Partizan Belgrade v Hajduk Kula, September 4, 2010) – The Brazilian marksman showed immaculate control, poise and execution to hold off three defenders before finishing with a perfect overhead-volley.
6). Carlos Vela (Arsenal v Bolton, September 11, 2010) – The pass-pass-pass masters of English football, Arsenal, put together an incredible team move before their young Mexican forward sealed things off with a crisp finish.
7). Jari Litmanen (AC Oulu v FC Lahti, September 18, 2010) – Proving the age is no barrier, 37-year-old Finnish legend Litmanen reminded the world of his presence with a breathtaking overhead-kick
8). Dimitar Berbatov (his second of the match) (Manchester United v Liverpool, September 19, 2010) – The overhead-kicks keep coming as Manchester United’s Bulgarian marksman netted a beauty against the old enemy.
9). Andrea Pirlo (Parma v AC Milan, October 2, 2010) – Setting the bar for long-range missiles, the AC Milan schemer produced a world-class rocket from over 40-yards out that unstoppably pieced the apex between the bar and post.
10). Mattie Burrows (Glentoran v Portadown, October 5, 2010) (pictured) – Words can barely do this sensational goal justice as the little known Irish striker became an instant worldwide star with a ridiculous flying, pirouette backheel goal.
